In this short article I’ll tell my own impression about Dutch side of this island.
If you came here by cruise vessel, you definitely start your trip from market plaza. That’s a place where you can buy electronics, souvenirs, cigars, sweets, whatever you want.
Shopping area
Prices here are much lower than in U.S. St. Thomas. Cheapest electronics you will find in electronic store in “Boolchands”. Indian staff, who is working here is very helpful, professional and ready to make sufficient discount for you. On your way to this shop quite pretty girl will offer you free taste of coconut milk, it’s very sweet and if you like it, you more than welcome to buy some. On market plaza square you see a monument of previous governor of this island and his biography on the black marble frame beneath.

Water taxi station is located on market plaza as well. For 8 US bucks you can make a round trip to closest beach.
But if you are young, want to save some money and do some sightseeing you can walk by your legs. It takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the nearest and very beautiful beach. You need to go to road under nearest mountain, turn left, pass by this road about 500 meters until first fuel refill station and than turn left.
Nobody will be able to describe beach which you will see there. Clear white sand and clearest blue-green water, a lot of pubs and bars, a lot available chairs and motorbike’s exhibition. Time passes quickly here.

Downtown is situated little bit farer from the beach. On the main street you can find a lot of more serious shops jewelry, liquors and cigars widest choice everywhere! Prices here and salesmen’s ability to reduce the price will surprise you as well. A lot of water fountains is here, your can see a big fish in channels under some bridges. All is shiny and very neat in this guest area. This is Philipsburg, a capital city.

But if you like some extreme and if you want to see real face of St. Maarten you should go farer.
About 2 km from Market Plaza you’ll find salt pond. That’s a very nice place as well. Road curled up between island and hills. You can see flamingos and other birds in the lake and goats between cactuses at the hills. If you follow this road around lake you’ll see how people live here. Everything is looking not as nice as at seashore area. If you want to find prostitute you will find some places with them here. Names of it are Carolina, Seamen’s Club and others.
Salt lake, parlor house
Carolina is most expensive one. Girls here came from Colombia and few of them came from Venezuela. They are very young and pretty. You will pay them 40 $ per one time + 3$ for hotel. Sometimes you can trade with them and pay less. Beer in the bar cost 2$ (Corona), taking pictures inside is strictly prohibited. Language here is Spanish, music is Latin. Atmosphere inside is unforgettable.

If you continue you trip you will find local zoo.
Be careful on this roads, I know about one accident when one couple ride here on rented motorbike and in one place somebody turned them down. They lost consciousness and when they came back to reality they were almost naked. Motorbike was gone as well. So for your safety you recommended to use only local taxi service. Drivers usually are nice and helpful. They can take you to any destination. If you take private taxi here, driver for sure will offer you marihuana: Smoke-smoke? This is Netherlands.
St. Maarten itself covers quite a large area; it has its own airport.
