Mexicans are very industrious people . Since not long ago exactly their island Cozumel becomes the biggest and most advanced resort in whole Caribbean. So they built one more pier , besides main in downtown , in about 3 miles out of the town.

Pier was built, certainly, to accept more ships and to increase trading. Place was named Puerta Maya, in translation from Spanish that means “Gate to Mayans . There is a lot of trading rows nearby , 99% range of goods are Chinese mass consumption staff. Once I needed to buy a really good gift , I passed everywhere , and couldn’t find any worth souvenir . All of them , including those with inscription Cozumel have most widespread tag in the world – “Made in China”. And with that level of quality clever offspring of Mayans are not feeling embarrased to overcharge people. Pack of “M&Ms cost 14 $, but I’m pretty sure, that its real price in US is not more than 5. Generally, shopping doesn’t give a lot of pleasure: under the glance of small squinted eyes on sweet smiling face, you feeling that somebody keeps you as a fool. To trade there is no point, article of trade doesn’t deserve that, but if you really found something and started to reduce price – sugary smile straight moving out from doll’s faces, salesman strains every nerve, but still tries to sell, because reserve of his profit is still huge. There are plenty of automatic telephones for international calls next to trade area (but place of distribution of phone cards not easy to find) .

Masked Mexican in Dart Vader’s costume
Mexico is a poor country; people try their best in making money. Changing their clothes to clowns in national costumes, I saw one person masked to Dart Vader. That job is really difficult trial, to stand in heavy foil, in stationary position under the heat +40 C. But from other side, nobody would stand here, if it was worthless.
National flavor is well emphasized here , for example , first cafe from the pier has name “Three amigos”, and there are funny statues of Mexican man and mule, which inviting inside.

What I liked here is taste and price of local beer . Of course, it’s still far away to Ukrainian prototypes , but for the Caribbean this choice is perfect. For icy vessel 0.33 l. you have to pay only 1 $.

Passanger terminal is located behind the stores, behind stores there is a street. Little bit along the street there is a hotel with bar, pool and piece of beach. Entrance permit here cost only 10$, if you gonna spend at least half of a day – that’s a good investment.

There is rocky coast to one side from hotel and terminal and jungles to another. Exactly here you can catch a taxi to downtown or anywhere else.

Last time I visited this place on Christmas. And here, not far away from the pier, huge and slim cristmas tree was decorated, and setted up statues, improvized moment of Jesus Christ’s birth. That scene was looking touching .

In the evening all that place blazing up, troublesome trading disappearing and you can just enjoy walking around or sitting in the cafe. Without heat that place becomes romantic and in reflections of huge vessel you feeling yourself really like in Mexico, described in movies, not in the market.
